Both Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro commended Emerson Royal on social media following his performance for Tottenham Hotspur yesterday.
Emerson Royal started at left-back in Tottenham‘s 2-1 win over Everton on Saturday.
The 24-year-old came in for the suspended Destiny Udogie after the Italian received his fifth booking of the season last Friday against Nottingham Forest.
Royal has been a valuable option for Ange Postecoglou this season, filling in across the backline. Of course, his natural position is at right-back, but he can also play in the middle of the defence.
While Royal’s play in the offensive third has much to be desired, he remains a reliable defensive asset for Tottenham.
Spurs rode their luck against Everton Sunday, winning 2-0 thanks to strikes from Richarlison and Heung-Min Son in the first 20 minutes.
Royal, on the other hand, put up a promising effort at left back, earning plaudits from Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro.
Royal’s latest Tottenham exhibition astounded Van de Ven and Porro.
After yesterday’s game, Royal took to Instagram to share his joy at picking up an important three points before Christmas.
He scribbled, “This is Tottenham.”
Van de Ven and Porro both added comments beneath the post, praising their teammate after an amazing performance.
Royal has polarised Tottenham fans since joining the club for £26 million two summers ago.
The Brazilian struggled under Antonio Conte because he never seemed to fit in as a wing-back.
However, the defender is proving to be a valuable asset for Postecoglou, as his adaptability has been crucial to Tottenham in recent months.
Udogie will serve his one-match suspension when Spurs visit to Brighton next week. However, Royal could be called upon again at center-back after Cristian Romero was hurt yesterday.
