Tottenham: Clement Lenglet transfer is being pursued

The Frenchman might soon be returning to north London.

Tottenham Hotspur‘s interest for Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet has apparently ‘advanced a lot,’ with a €5 million fee perhaps enough to seal a transfer rather than €12 million.

Are the Spurs interested in signing Clement Lenglet?
Spurs and Ange Postecoglou have been busy in the transfer market preparing for the upcoming season, with a number of new faces already coming through the door.

Attacking midfielder James Maddison has joined from Leicester City, goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has joined from Empoli, and left-winger Manor Solomon has signed a free transfer contract with Tottenham. Meanwhile, Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski have made their loan transfers permanent in deals for €40 million and €30 million, respectively, bringing the club’s total current summer spending to €136 million.
Lenglet was also on loan at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last season, but the club earlier opted against making the move permanent.

However, a full-time move to north London looks to be in the cards for the player who was dubbed “outstanding” by the media in the early parts of the previous season.

Flashfootballnews has published a number of Spurs and Lenglet updates, two of which came in the previous 48 hours from Spanish publication Sport.
The first said that the La Liga winners are trying hard to sell players, and that a transfer to Tottenham for Lenglet is currently being ‘advanced significantly,’ with some hope that the deal will take place.

The second claimed that a cost of €5 million (£4.3 million) from Tottenham may be enough for Barcelona to accept, despite the fact that they had previously requested more than €12 million. The Nou Camp is eager to offload the player’s £204,000-per-week pay, with the source claiming €5 million may be a steal for the north London club.

How talented is Clement Lenglet?
Last season, Lenglet made 35 appearances for Tottenham in all competitions, including 26 in the Premier League. During the campaign, he received praise from John Wenham, who described him as dependable.

“I just wanted to give (Lenglet) credit because I think his performance slipped under the radar a little bit.” So far, I’ve been impressed with him.

“The fact that he has come in for Ben Davies and we don’t look any weaker is a huge credit to him.”

“He’s a new Premier League signing, I know he has a lot of experience from Barcelona and France, but he already seems very reliable, like we could drop him in for any fixture.”
According to WhoScored, the 28-year-old led the Spurs in clearances, average passes, and pass completion per 90 minutes. However, in terms of match rating, the Frenchman was the club’s 14th greatest performance.

According to FBRef, Lenglet has been likened to centre-backs Edmond Tapsoba, Micky van de Ven, and Piero Hincapie, all of whom have been connected with a transfer to Spurs. Over the last 12 months, Lenglet has ranked in the top 1% of centre-backs for pass completion, the top 4% for through balls, and the top 4% for tackles in the final third, indicating that he may be a wise addition at the appropriate price.

Following his first year in England, Postecoglou may believe he can get the most out of Lenglet, and a move may be something to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.
