IN HIS TEAM OF THE SEASON, PAUL MERSON SELECTS SPURS STAR SIGNED BY NUNO ESPIRITO SANTO FROM TOTTENHAM

Cristian Romero is a player who puts Tottenham Hotspur fans on the edge of their seats on a regular basis.

Cristian Romero, an all-action defender with an old-school flair, can stop any attacker from scoring, but he can also get himself sent off at any time.

Despite his impulsive play, Paul Merson is a big supporter of the Tottenham Hotspur star and named him to his Team of the Season at the halfway point of this season.

As he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (26/12/23 at 2:35 pm), the former Arsenal man stated, “I wouldn’t want to play against him if he was a forward.”

Whatever is going on on the field, regardless of the score or match circumstances. Cristian Romero will make sure you know he’s there.

It can be excessive at times, and as Spurs supporters saw against Chelsea, it can be extremely costly.

But it’s not something you’d want to take away from him, as Paul Merson chose Cristian Romero and William Saliba to his Team of the Season thus far.

“I would have gone with him (Micky van de Ven in my Team of the Season), but I don’t think he has played a lot of football,” Merson stated. “If he had been fit, he would have been in mine.”

“But I went with Romero and Saliba, who has been absolutely incredible.” I’m thinking of Tottenham’s center-back. He, too, is remarkable in my opinion.

“He’s a boss. I know he may be rash at times. But, if I’m being honest, I’d rather not be marked against him.

“He is one of them players, if I was a centre-forward, I would think ‘nah, I wouldn’t want to play against him’.”

Cristian Romero requires a comforting presence close to him.

Yes, the World Cup winner, who Nuno Espirito Santo signed in 2021, needs to tone it down a notch.

But you can’t take his aggression out of his game because it’s part of what makes him great and a fundamental reason why he won the World Cup.

Romero requires a comforting presence next to him. Perhaps that will come in the form of Micky van de Ven, who has been brilliant since his summer transfer.

His injury didn’t help matters, but as soon as he returns, the Dutch star will prove to be the perfect foil for Romero at the heart of Tottenham’s defence.
