Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier could be fined two weeks’ pay for his red card against Preston North End on Boxing Day.
Former Tottenham and Rangers defender Alan Hutton spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the “silly” incident, claiming it cost the Whites all three points.
Meslier was sent off early in the second half for pushing Milutin Osmajic, who had just confronted Ben Whiteman.
Osmajic fell down dramatically, but Meslier’s action was more than enough for referee John Smith to brandish the 23-year-old with his first red card of his career.
Hutton showed no sympathy for the shot-stopper and asserted that any fine will be determined by Daniel Farke’s reaction to the situation.
“It depends on the manager but for doing something so silly he could get fined two weeks’ wages from the club,” a source told Football Insider.
“Anything is possible. He puts his squad in an impossible scenario, and then they lose the game.
“Preston went on to score a few minutes after Meslier was sent off, effectively costing his team three points.”
“It’s the red mist,” says the narrator. He gets involved with two different players.
“As soon as you raise your hands to someone, you run the risk of being sent away.”
“He lost his head completely for a minute and he cost his team.”
