Leeds United is competing with Rangers and others for a £5.2 million left-back

As the January transfer window approaches, Leeds United has been connected with this £5.2 million full-back.

Leeds United are expected to make several signings during this month’s transfer window, as Daniel Farke’s side continues to struggle in the Championship.

The Whites have won just one of their previous five Championship games, losing their last two, and are now fourth in the table, nine points behind second-placed Ipswich Town.

With the winter transfer window being open, Leeds have been linked with Hellas Verona full-back Josh Doig as a potential new acquisition.

Who exactly is Josh Doig?
Doig, 21, is from Scotland and began his career at Queen’s Park before moving on to Hibernian.

Then, in 2022, he moved to Italy, signed with Hellas Verona, who presently lie in 17th place in Serie A.

Doig made 22 league appearances last season and has already made 10 this season, starting against Juventus and Napoli, as well as being called to the Scotland squad for the second time during the November international break.

What has been said about Leeds United’s Josh Doig?
Torino‘s trusted fan page Toro Goal stated yesterday that Hellas‘ Serie A rivals Torino have initiated talks over a possible €6 million (£5.2 million) move for Doig, but that Monza, Rangers, and Leeds United have also made contact.

It is also stated that Doig‘s representatives are hard at work on a probable January transfer.

A possible coup for Daniel Farke?
Doig is a left-back, a position in which Leeds United are currently lacking, with Junior Firpo the only fit and recognised left-back available to Farke.

So this appears to be a position that Leeds could aim to strengthen in the coming months, and Doig appears to match the criteria; he’s young and has decent experience having played in Serie A, with videos displaying his ability as an attacking-minded full-back.

Doig loves to get up the pitch, cross into the box, and beat defenders with the ball, but he also performs the basics of defending very well, so he appears to be a very well-rounded player; former Hibs manager Lee Johnson characterised Doig as a ‘powerhouse’.

A deal for Doig, on the other hand, does not appear to be simple, and for a variety of reasons.

Hellas paid £3 million for him in 2022, so he won’t be cheap, with this estimated £5.2 million fee appearing to be a starting point.

And, with so many teams interested and in contact, the sum for Doig may swiftly escalate, sparking a bidding war.

He’s also under contract until 2026, meaning Hellas isn’t under any imminent rush to sell, thus the ball is in their court for the time being.

Leeds will have done their homework on Doig, and his playing style appears to fit the playing style at Elland Road under Farke, so if Leeds can get this one done, it may be a very wise decision.
