Tottenham Hotspur are not interested in reuniting Jota with Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham Hotspur are not interested in signing Al Ittihad star Jota in January in order to reunite him with Ange Postecoglou in North London.
Before joining the Saudi Pro League last summer, the forward was a Celtic star under Postecoglou. However, Jota has yet to settle in the Middle East and is expected to leave soon.
The January transfer window in 2024 provides him with the possibility to return to Europe. Tottenham have long been connected with the 24-year-old, but a January transfer appears improbable. According to Rudy Galetti of X, the left-winger will remain at Al Ittihad until the end of the current season.
Jota, a left winger, can also play on the opposite flank. Bringing him in would relieve pressure on Son Heung-min and allow Postecoglou to use his captain more upfield. Following Harry Kane’s departure, the South Korean has become the club’s leading goalscorer, but the absence of capable deputies is a big weakness in the Spurs side.
This will be put to the test later this month when Son travels for the Asia Cup. Bringing in Jota would have given the North Londoners options as they prepare to launch a surprise title challenge.
The 24-year-old is a player Postecoglou is familiar with, and the Australian manager could have easily incorporated him into his Spurs system. Unfortunately, this is not to be. It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will now search elsewhere or wait until the summer to make a move.
While it is understandable for managers to desire to reunite with former players, it is far from a definite strategy for success. After all, despite managing Antony, Donny van de Beek, and Andre Onana at Ajax Amsterdam, Erik ten Hag has struggled to pull out any kind of excellence from them.
