The German media claimed on 2 January via their website that, with no current option contained in the loan deal that brought the Austrian to the Bundesliga in the summer, the two parties are in continuous talks about a long-term solution.

Despite suggestions that the 25-year-old may return to Elland Road if Daniel Farke’s Whites are promoted to the Premier League, The Athletic’s Phil Hay has subsequently revealed that the club does not anticipate him to play for them again.

Wober has been a regular for Monchengladbach this season, starting all but one league game due to illness.

Has the ship sailed?

Based on his performance since his January debut last season, the former Red Bull Salzburg defender would be an addition in the squad next season.

However, his summer departure after initially indicating he would be pleased to stay [Leeds Live, 6 July] suggests that a true reunion would require commitment on both sides.

If that isn’t the case from the club’s perspective, and Wober is wanted in Germany, it may be easier for everyone to go forward.

The main concern now is if his present club can come up with the money to satisfy Leeds United, however it wouldn’t take long for the club to recoup their £11 million investment [Sky Sports].

A lot may happen in the months between now and the end of his loan deal, so it would be premature to rule him out of playing for the Whites.

However, if talks about keeping him in the Bundesliga are already started, it appears unlikely that he will return.
