Following Tottenham Hotspur’s announcement this week, Paul Merson believes the club may have pulled off a transfer coup.
Tottenham stunned everyone when they pursued a deal for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner. Werner, of course, did not have the finest time in his previous Premier League stint.
However, Tottenham announced on Tuesday that Werner had been signed on loan. The move includes the option to buy (via BBC Sport).
Paul Merson believes Timo Werner can be a tremendous success at Tottenham.
It appears to be a low-risk decision by Ange Postecoglou’s team. If Werner fails to improve on his performances at Chelsea, Tottenham are under no obligation to keep him.
However, if everything goes as planned, Spurs could be in for a bargain. That is why Arsenal fan and analyst Darren Bent expressed concern over Tottenham’s signing of Werner.
Speaking with Sportskeeda, Paul Merson stated that the Germany international may be a huge success – but only under one condition.
“Timo Werner has been the talk of the town following his surprise loan move to Tottenham. I saw this man a lot when he was at Chelsea, and I can’t think of a player who was flagged offside more than him. I can see a striker being overly eager to go behind the backline if he’s slow, but Werner is lightning-quick, so I’m not sure why he was always in an offside position,” he explained.
“If he manages to sort out this problem, I truly think this transfer could turn out to be a masterstroke from Ange Postecoglou.”
No-brainer for Spurs.
To be fair to Werner, he is far from the first player who has struggled after making a large money move to Chelsea in recent years. In retrospect, his record for the Blues is much more fair, with 44 goals in 89 games across all competitions.
Admittedly, since returning to the Bundesliga, he hasn’t done much to impress. However, he may benefit from some people’s extremely low expectations.
Tottenham appears to have made an excellent decision in this transfer window. And if it pays off, many parties will question if they made a huge mistake by not making a move themselves.
