Neco Williams has messaged Ethan Ampadu following Leeds United’s 3-0 win over Cardiff City on January 13, amid speculations that he is on their list of prospective January transfer targets.
Following the triumph, the Nottingham Forest full-back responded to his Welsh international teammate, raising questions about his future at Elland Road.
According to Athletic journalist Phil Hay [11 January], Williams has been discussed in transfer conversations at Leeds, however Forest are unlikely to allow a departure.
Following the win on January 13, Ampadu posted on Instagram, “Big W on the road,” to which Williams responded, “Oh my skip” with an eye emoji, referring to Ampadu’s captaincy of the Leeds side.
Speculation is prevalent
Williams‘ comment referring to Ampadu as “my skip” was almost definitely owing to their Welsh connection, but that won’t stop supporters from speculating given recent transfer rumours and Ampadu‘s recent promotion to captain Leeds.
After Luke Ayling joined Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the season, with his contract set to expire in the summer, the Yorkshire club has been looking for a new right-back, and bringing Williams to Elland Road makes sense.
Leeds already has a nucleus of Welshmen in the club, with Ampadu, Joe Rodon, and Daniel James, so adding Williams to the mix would be a smooth transition for the full-back, who already has pals in the team.
However, the revelation that Forest are unlikely to ratify a deal dampens the celebratory mood and rumours about a possible transaction.
Williams has started just four games for Forest this season and has only appeared off the bench in Nuno Espirito Santo’s two games as manager.
