Journalist Mike McGrath has revealed what he has been told regarding the cost of signing Santiago Gimenez, with Tottenham Hotspur showing strong interest in the striker.
Santiago Gimenez has been one of Europe’s most impressive forwards this season. The Mexican international has 19 goals in 17 Eredivisie appearances this season.
Unsurprisingly, he is generating a lot of curiosity. Tottenham are really interested in Gimenez. But Spurs are unlikely to make a big-money move for a striker in the January transfer window, having already signed two players, including Timo Werner, who can play across the forward line.
Tottenham needs a club-record price to sign Santiago Gimenez.
Certainly, Gimenez will be a name to watch this summer.
But, appearing on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, McGrath indicated that Tottenham will have to break their club record to sign the 22-year-old, with Feyenoord wanting for at least £69 million.
“We reported in the Telegraph that Gimenez is at Feyenoord. Many other clubs have observed him, and people are waiting to see how much Feyenoord will ask for him. You’re hearing that it will cost a lot of money, about €80 million or more. “He’s highly regarded,” he stated.
Spurs may be concerned following the previous striker deal.
Of course, Tottenham will be concerned about Gimenez’s ability to be as prolific in the Premier League. He has undoubtedly been fantastic, but other players have failed to carry that form outside of the Eredivisie.
Spurs know this better than most. Vincent Janssen arrived after scoring 27 goals in the Dutch top flight. However, he made only 27 league games for Tottenham before leaving.
Given that Harry Kane is no longer at the club, Janssen should have an easier time. However, he continued to struggle with seizing opportunities when they presented themselves.
Someone will take a chance on Gimenez, regardless of his asking price. And there will be plenty of Tottenham fans hoping that they are the ones that take the gamble.
