Leeds United transfer news arises as Ben Johnson is labelled ‘one to watch’ in West Ham contract update

According to the Mirror, West Ham defender has been labelled a “one to watch” in the January transfer window, with Leeds United showing interest.

On January 18, the newspaper stated on their website that, while Johnson is appreciated by Leeds, he could be set for a run in the West Ham side, which could lead to new contract talks.

Johnson‘s current contract is slated to expire in the summer, and how he performs in the coming games could determine his long-term future in East London.

Leeds should move quickly on this one

While Johnson may intend to stay at West Ham for the long term, and that decision may be determined by his ability to impress those at the top in East London, Leeds should be in his ear, attempting to persuade him that a move tois the best option.

The club is seeking for new full-backs in the summer window, with a right-back emerging as a key position following Luke Ayling‘s departure, allowing Johnson to establish himself as the first choice.

17-year-old Archie Gray has been the main option for Daniel Farke in that position, despite his natural and preferred function being in midfield, so if Johnson arrives at Elland Road, he might make the position his own and allow Gray to return to the middle of the pitch.
It appears that it will take some convincing, but if Leeds can complete a deal before Johnson is permitted to play a few games at West Ham, this transfer might be completed before the window closes on January 31.
