Neil Redfearn has weighed in on Junior Firpo’s performance in Leeds United’s comeback victory over Preston North End at Elland Road
Leeds needed a late penalty from Joel Piroe to defeat Preston on Sunday. Finally, it was a terribly frustrating afternoon, with the visitors displaying no desire to capitalise on their excellent start.
Leeds needed to be ready to fight, especially in the second half. And the rewards came late, with Leeds handed a penalty for a handball. Ryan Ledson perhaps did well to stay on the field following an appalling challenge on Ilia Gruev. Fortunately, his arm made contact with the ball in stoppage time, allowing Piroe to take the penalty kick.
Neil Redfearn praises Junior Firpo following Leeds’ win
Junior Firpo started at left back, ahead of Sam Byram. And Firpo did superbly to set up Leeds‘ equaliser six minutes into the game by finding Daniel James with an outstanding cross.
Of course, Firpo has had a mixed experience at Leeds. However, commenting on BBC Radio Leeds, Neil Redfearn stated that he was really impressed by the 27-year-old’s performance.
“I thought Leeds had settled down. Firpo delivered a beautiful pass in for the equalizer. I think he played one of his best games today. “Great header from the little fella at the back stick to bring Leeds level,” he remarked.
Championship certainly plays to the 27-year-old’s abilities
Firpo deserves to be recognized for his contributions in the closing third of recent games. The full-back has four assists in his last three matches.
Obviously, doubts will remain about his defensive deficiencies. It will be a long time before supporters fully trust the former Barcelona star’s defensive abilities.
But in the Championship, where Leeds can ask so many questions of opponents, Firpo‘s defensive flaws are not as problematic as they were in the Premier League.
