Graham Smyth has revealed that Leeds United fans were quick to stand and praise Jaidon Anthony as he began his warm-up during the match against Preston North End.
Daniel Farke’s side picked up a fourth consecutive win by running out 2-1 winners over Ryan Lowe’s Preston on Sunday (21 January), due to goals from Dan James and Joel Piroe after Will Keane put the visitors ahead after 70 seconds. Away from the action on the pitch, Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Smyth stated that the home crowd were quick to praise substitute Anthony during his warm-up when Leeds confirmed the winger‘s mother had died earlier this week.
On Sunday (21 January), he posted on his X account: “Leeds fans out on their feet to applaud Jaidon Anthony as he comes out to warm-up, alongside Sam Byram and Mateo Joseph.”
Great reception
The Leeds United crowd is as united as any other club in England, and their outpouring of emotion and love for Anthony on Sunday was a fantastic show of just how they will rally around a player.
Anthony’s time at Elland Road so far hasn’t been particularly remarkable on the pitch, but that doesn’t matter in times like today, and even though his time at Leeds may be coming to an end at the end of the season, he has truly been accepted by the supporters.
Hopefully, football will serve as a distraction for the winger at this tough time, allowing him to find enjoyment on the field.
When he steps onto the field, he will undoubtedly have the support of those in the stands, which will be a huge advantage.
In other Leeds United news, Sam Byram has opened up about his future at Elland Road as he approaches the conclusion of his contract.
