Stuart Gray, a former football player from Harrogate, passed away at the age of 50 following a diagnosis of an uncommon and deadly form of cancer.
Stuart was a player for Celtic and had one appearance for the Scotland under-21 team. He was the nephew of Frank and the son of Leeds United icon Eddie Gray.
The father of five was given a stage four cholangiocarcinoma diagnosis last year, which is also referred to as bile duct cancer, according to The Stray Ferret.
The tubes that carry the gallbladder and liver to the small intestine are where the cancer starts to grow.
Nick, Stuart’s brother, created a GoFundMe website to collect money for more advanced, experimental treatments, and thus far, the page has raised £50,000 of the £100,000 target.
The funds raised will be sent to the AMMF, a cholangiocarcinoma foundation that promotes awareness of the illness and funds studies aimed at developing early detection and efficient therapies.
The Celtics‘ players showed their respect for Ross County on Saturday by donning black armbands.
Stuart was also an Oxford United, Rushden & Diamonds, and Reading player.
Leeds said in a statement that it was “deeply saddened” by the announcement. It also stated:
“During this difficult time, Eddie and his wife Linda, the entire Gray family, and Stuart’s friends would all like to receive their warmest regards and well wishes from everyone at Leeds United.”
