Mauricio Pochettino hints at a Conor Gallagher trade and confirms Chelsea’s double return

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino spoke ahead of his team’s next Premier League showdown against Liverpool.

Mauricio Pochettino intimated that Chelsea will not sell Conor Gallagher to Tottenham this month, despite suggestions that Spurs are interested in signing the England midfielder. Gallagher has been an important member of Pochettino’s team this season, but his contract at Stamford Bridge expires in 18 months.

Chelsea are thought to be eager to split ways with Gallagher after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract, but the 23-year-old is valued at around £45 million, which might be a sticking point in a window where English clubs’ spending has been limited owing to financial limitations.

Spurs were linked with Gallagher in the summer, and Ange Postecoglou‘s club is still mentioned as a possible destination, but Gallagher is reportedly reluctant to leave Chelsea this month as he seeks regular football ahead of a potential call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.

However, with time running out to sign a new contract with the team where he came through the system, Gallagher and Chelsea must determine whether he should leave the club while they still have some value from a sale.

But Pochettino downplayed the possibility of selling academy players, including Gallagher, before the January window shuts. When asked about the possibility of those Cobham stars leaving to better their financial situation, he said, “At the present, no news.

“All is quiet, serene and relaxed. I spoke with the players, the entire squad, and attended meetings today. We are all relaxed with the squad’s current status.”

Pochettino also stated that further acquisitions are unlikely this month, given the relatively quiet transfer window for all Premier League clubs. “We are quiet,” he explained. “The market is quiet.”

Chelsea will welcome back Christopher Nkunku and Malo Gusto before their travel to Anfield to face Liverpool in their first league game since Jurgen Klopp confirmed his departure from the Reds at the end of the season.

“I think it’s good news that Malo Gusto and Christoph can be in the squad tomorrow,” Pochettino said in a statement. “We’ll see. We’re always waiting until the last moment. At the time, this is fantastic news. Perhaps Nico Jackson can participate tomorrow if he arrives.”
