Who is Lucas Bergvall? Tottenham’s new addition is a generational talent

The 18-year-old is the most promising prospect to come out of Sweden in a generation.

Lucas Bergvall is one of those rare precocious talents who has never given anyone any doubt about his generational potential.

The Premier League has hosted many such prodigies in the past, and it appears that it may do so again when Bergvall turned down a Deadline Day move to Barcelona in favour of Tottenham in a deal worth roughly £8.5 million plus add-ons.

Bergvall, who underwent a physical at Tottenham‘s training ground and formally sealed a move on his 18th birthday, is expected to stay with Djurgarden, where he is a first-team regular, until the summer before joining his new club.

Beating Barcelona to the signing of Bergvall is a significant coup for the north London club, which hosted the Swede at their training ground on Monday to pitch themselves as his best next move, before Barca did the same the next day.

Bergvall has occasionally played as a striker for Djurgarden, but he prefers to play central midfield. Despite his rather tall 6ft 1in height, he possesses outstanding footwork in confined spaces, making him the modern-day technical European midfielder.

Bergvall had an 88.1 percent pass accuracy rate during the most recent Swedish league season, which ended in November. He also performed admirably on defence, winning 71.4% of his tackles.

Tottenham have been tracking Bergvall for several months, watching him defy his age and establish himself as one of Djurgarden’s most significant players after getting into the main squad in December 2022 with a £770,000 transfer from IF Brommapojkarna.

It bodes well for Bergvall that he advanced through Brommapojkarna’s academy and began his senior career. The lower-league top-flight club is one of Sweden’s most prolific in terms of creating and fostering young talent, having started off with Anders Limpar, Viktor Gyokeres, and soon-to-be teammate Dejan Kulusevski.

Bergvall was the only 2006-born player in the most recent Allsvenskan season to start and score.
