Leeds United and 49ers must be careful about new contract plans for key man in 2024. – View

Leeds are aiming for automatic promotion from the Championship this season after being demoted the previous season.

Daniel Farke was the man the 49ers looked to to restore the club’s top-flight status, a feat he accomplished twice when managing Norwich City, winning the league both times.

Leeds will offer Farke a new deal if promoted, according to reports.

Farke’s record has put Leeds firmly in contention for the top two this season, and Football Insider reported this week that the club intends to offer the manager new terms in the summer if he secures promotion.

Such an agreement would add to the already long-term contract he signed in the summer when manager replaced Sam Allardyce, which runs until 2027.

A new contract would also be a reward for the German, with him receiving a large salary increase for getting the club back into the top flight.

Leeds should be careful about rewarding Farke.

If we are promoted, there is no doubt that Farke deserves a bonus or wage boost of some kind, as leading Leeds out of this Championship season would be huge.

However, signing him to a four-year contract in the summer following relegation was a brave decision by the 49ers, and offering him a new contract before he even steps foot in the top flight would be even more daring.

Farke has faced the same fate with Norwich in his two Premier League seasons, and the club should not make matters worse if a difficult decision has be made.

Having said that, Farke‘s setup this season with Leeds appears to be geared toward improved Premier League preparation, with the team playing well in transition and having a good rest defending.

It just seems risky to consider tying him down even further, especially given that the bottom half of the Premier League might be a slog next season, as it is for almost every promoted club.
