Leeds’ ‘clever’ ex-player admits to being heartbroken after leaving Elland Road

Jesse Marsch left Leeds United a little over a year ago

The American’s departure in early February 2023 was a watershed moment in Leeds’ season, as neither Javi Gracia nor Sam Allardyce were able to keep the club from relegation.

Jesse Marsch
Marsch departed Leeds under a cloud, although from what he says, he thoroughly enjoyed his time at Elland Road.

Indeed, Marsch can’t speak highly enough about the club, and in an interview with the Kickin’ It Podcast, he revealed how devastated he was when he left, claiming that he didn’t even say goodbye to his players because he couldn’t stop crying.
Jesse Marsch is upset about leaving Leeds.

The ‘smart’ boss admits he nearly cried as he left Elland Road.  “Were you bitter about how it ended at Leeds?” Marsch was asked a question.  “I was simply heartbroken, not bitter. My heart was broken. I admired the team and the people at the club; I felt like we were all working together and in the correct way. “I didn’t even say goodbye because I’d have been crying, and I don’t like putting myself in that situation,” Marsch added.

Ruthless  This is the terrible truth of football management.  When things aren’t going well, owners must be brutal, and once your time is up, you lose everything you’ve built.  Granted, Marsch didn’t do a fantastic job at Leeds, but he did develop a squad in his own image, and by all accounts, he got along well with his players.  Unfortunately, Marsch left Elland Road under a cloud, and he was unable to leave much of a legacy; unfortunately, this is the truth of modern-day football: if you’re not performing your job properly, you won’t be given much of a chance.
