Leeds United: Commentator astounded by “unprecedented” circumstances involving Southampton, Ipswich, and Leicester

If Leeds United keeps up their current performance, Paul Robinson believes they will be promoted from a “unheard of” Championship season.

The former England goalie is shocked by how high the level has been raised in the current campaign, with four clubs averaging over two points per game. He already feels that the second tier is “ridiculously difficult” to escape at the best of circumstances.

The Whites‘ thrilling victory over league leaders Leicester City on February 23 at Elland Road cut the difference between first and second place to six points. However, they are still tied for third place with Ipswich Town, with Southampton five points behind.

Robinson believes the Whites have done enough to earn to return to the Premier League on their first attempt, but admits it will be a more difficult assignment than ever in a “phenomenal” season.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, the BBC Sport analyst said: “This season’s Championship has been outstanding. Look at the facts; four clubs are averaging more than two points per game. Since the Championship’s inception, just 18 clubs have averaged more than two points each game.

“Four of them are doing it this season, making it extremely tough for anyone to leave the league.

“They have one of, if not the strongest squads in the Championship, as I’ve stated all season. They have an excellent potential to advance. And, as things stand, if they keep doing what they’re doing, they’ll rise, as they should.

“But the Championship is a ridiculously difficult league and this season it’s been proven even harder by these four teams on more than two points a game, which is almost unheard of.”

Leeds United supported for Premier League comeback in a ‘phenomenal’ Championship race.

If Farke does the job he was hired to do and returns the Whites to the first flight right away, he will not have done so by default, as Sky Sports scheduling complicates matters.

The advantage that the relegated sides have in terms of parachute payments has been highlighted to a considerable extent by all three teams’ blistering pace.

However, Ipswich, who were promoted from League One last summer, have also made a mockery of it, demonstrating how unusual this season has been.

For a while, it appeared that Kieran McKenna’s side would be untouchable, let alone the runaway Foxes, but Leeds United have already surpassed one, just, and are closing in on the other after doing the double over both, leaving the title, automatic promotion, or a deflating place in the play-offs all on the table.
