Liverpool: Michael Edwards’ return is soon to be confirmed, with former Bournemouth player Richard Hughes also set to join.

Liverpool are likely to confirm Michael Edwards’ return next week in a job that will see him oversee football operations.
The return of Michael Edwards to manage Liverpool’s reorganization is expected to be announced next week, with Richard Hughes joining as sporting director.

We understand Edwards will be granted a significant position inside Fenway Sports Group, where he would supervise football operations for the Premier League club, among other exterior responsibilities.
There are a few loose ends to tie up, but a deal is expected to be concluded in the next days.
Edwards initially turned down a proposal from Liverpool‘s owners to handle the post-Jurgen Klopp period at Anfield, but face-to-face negotiations with FSG in Boston last  weekend cleared the way for his return.

The remit mentioned was broader than originally stated and provided greater responsibility than other positions Edwards had declined since leaving the Merseyside club in 2022, including becoming Chelsea‘s CEO of Football.
He had also been mentioned internally at Manchester United, but not in a role that would have suited him under their pre-INEOS structure.

Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid inquired about Edwards’ interest in taking over as sporting director, but it was evident he would not continue in that role.

FSG owner John W Henry and president Mike Gordon were well aware of this and offered a broader perspective. After originally being turned down, they were able to make a more appealing presentation in the United States, including more than only Liverpool.
Edwards will ensure Klopp‘s successor has a good foundation to continue providing long-term success.
Hughes, who notified Bournemouth that he would be departing as technical director last year and had his departure confirmed on Wednesday, will report to him.

The most immediate task for the pair is to find a replacement for Klopp.
Xabi Alonso, desired by Bayern Munich, remains the best prospect. Alternative alternatives, such as Sporting manager Ruben Amorim, have also been considered.
