Tottenham are one of the most distinctive teams we’ve ever witnessed.
Spurs have morphed into one of the world’s most dynamic attacking teams under Ange Postecoglou‘s leadership, and they play in ways we’ve never seen before.
Michael Owen has been examining Spurs’ tactical setup on Premier League Productions, and he thinks Tottenham‘s use of full-backs, specifically Destiny Udogie‘s location, piques his interest.
Indeed, Owen claims that he has never seen a full-back play like Udogie, which he believes is incredibly unusual.
Destiny Udogie is extremely special.
Owen spoke about the £15 million man.
“The fullbacks, Udogie, are breaking forward. I have never seen full-backs like this in my life. Owen stated that the full-backs are essentially playing as centre-forwards.
“It’s strange, because you can see someone running at the top of the screen. You’re not sure where they’re coming from.
Unlike everyone else
We can clearly see where Owen is coming from here.
Udogie is unlike any other player we’ve encountered.
We’ve seen full-backs act as wingers and full-backs invert before, but Udogie virtually plays as a number 10, which is an unusual way to play.
Of course, as we’ve seen this season, playing Udogie in this role works quite well, but that doesn’t change the reality that this is a completely unique position that we’ve never seen before.
Ange Postecoglou vowed to bring some new ideas to Tottenham, and it’s fair to say that his use of full-backs at Spurs is absolutely unique, making Tottenham one of the most entertaining and intriguing sides in the Premier League.
Udogie is a wonderful player, and he may be the only one in the Premier League who can currently play such a role.
