Manchester United have suffered another injury setback ahead of their FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool this weekend, according to Samuel Luckhurst.
Manchester United injury news
On Sunday afternoon, the Red Devils will confront their biggest rivals at Old Trafford, hoping to terminate their prospects of capturing four trophies this season. Granted, Erik ten Hag’s team will enter the game as underdogs, but they can be expected to lift their game, given their opponents.
United’s season has definitely been disappointing, with sixth position in the Premier League far from satisfactory at the moment, but injuries can be used as an excuse for their troubles, with so many key players absent during the campaign.
Against Liverpool, for example, the Red Devils will be without important defence combination Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw, as well as Jonny Evans.
Meanwhile, Rasmus Hojlund has been a major loss as a leader, having scored in six consecutive matches prior to his current layoff, so Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford will have to step up this weekend if he isn’t fit to start.
Another player has been added to United’s list of absentees as they prepare for one of their most important matches of the 2023/24 season thus far.
Manchester United suffer another injury before Liverpool.
Taking to X, Luckhurst stated that Manchester United custodian Altay Bayindir will miss the match against Liverpool due to an injury.
As Luckhurst points out, this isn’t the worst injury blow in the world, given Bayindir isn’t a key player – he’s only appeared for United once, conceding twice against Newport County in the FA Cup fourth round earlier this season – but it does sum up the injuries on display this season.
It also means that 21-year-old Demot Mee, who has yet to make a senior appearance for the Red Devils, could be called up as an emergency custodian, testing Ten Hag’s squad depth.
United should still be able to pitch a starting lineup that may cause Liverpool difficulties, with Garnacho and Rashford dangerous on their day and Bruno Fernandes capable of making a difference in the final third.
Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, and Scott McTominay will likely form a well-balanced midfield, while Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire are highly experienced at the rear.
United drew 0-0 against all odds at Anfield in the Premier League earlier this season, demonstrating that form isn’t always significant in this fixture, therefore Ten Hag’s side should still be confident of reaching the FA Cup semi-finals.
