‘It’s my turn’: £17 million Tottenham player tells why he ignored Christian Eriksen this week

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg captained Denmark for the first time this week, as the Tottenham midfielder helped his country defeat the Faroe Islands 2-0, ignoring Christian Eriksen in the process.

The 28-year-old Tottenham midfielder earned his 75th cap on Tuesday night, as Denmark cruised to a 2-0 friendly victory. In addition to the veteran Hojbjerg, Denmark fielded an experimental team.

There was no Kasper Schmeichel, Simon Kjaer, or Manchester United‘s Eriksen, who played 305 times for Tottenham over seven years from 2013 to 2020. He came on at halftime.

Hojbjerg, who is fighting for playing time at Spurs and has expressed dissatisfaction with his current situation under Ange Postecoglou, opened the goal after being given the Denmark captain’s armband.

Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg captains the country for the first time.

Given the presence of such leaders as Schmeichel, Kjaer, and Eriksen, he captained his country for the first time – in his 75th cap – before scoring. Hojbjerg had an excellent night as Denmark won 2-0.

Christian Eriksen

Of course, with Eriksen entering the game at halftime, it’s possible that the Manchester United player was given the armband. However, Hojbjerg maintained his lead as the players entered the second half.

Speaking to Danish site Bold, Hojbjerg, who is strongly connected with a £17 million move to Juventus in the summer, was questioned if he intended to hand over the armband to Eriksen.

“I am proud, and today my heart is filled with joy,” Hojbjerg remarked, according to Bold. “Of course, I did not give Eriksen the captain’s armband. If it’s my turn, it’s my turn. “The others will be permitted next time.”

What next for Tottenham’s Hojbjerg, as Euro 2024 approaches?
Hojbjerg will continue at Spurs until the summer, but the chances are he will leave the London club – the only question is whether it would be before, after, or during Euro 2024.

Of course, Hojbjerg and Denmark have been placed in the same group as England, alongside Serbia and Slovenia in Group C. He might have left England if he had the chance to play Gareth Southgate‘s side.

Hojbjerg, a strong midfielder, lacked the intensity and quickness needed to play for Postecoglou. Indeed, the Australian manager prefers Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr.

Hojbjerh is unlikely to receive much of a chance until Euro 2024, but injury could change things. However, it is simple to claim that he has at least started his final game for Tottenham ahead of the summer transfer season.
