High-flying Leeds United will go back to the top of the Championship if they get a positive result at Coventry City this afternoon. Leaders Ipswich Town failed to crank up the pressure on their promotion rivals, losing 1-0 at Norwich City in the lunchtime kick-off.
Goal-scoring opportunities were at a premium in the East Anglian derby as Marcelino Nunez registered with the only shot on target in the first half. The Chilean midfielder’s long range free kick proved too hot to handle for Tractor Boys goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky.
It is only Ipswich’s third league defeat in 2024. The result means the Tractor Boys could end the day outside of the automatic promotion places.
A draw for the Whites at the CBS Arena would be enough to see them reclaim top spot on goal difference as long as Leicester fail to win at home to Birmingham City. Daniel Farke’s troops head into today’s clash at Coventry City on the back of a 15-match unbeaten run. They have taken an outstanding 41 points from 45 on offer to reel in Ipswich and Leicester at the top of the table.
Midfield playmaker Ilia Gruev makes a welcome return to action, having shrugged off a minor ankle problem, while Connor Roberts and Wilfried Gnonto have been deemed fit enough for the bench. Roberts and Gnonto were both not expected to be available for selection for another fortnight.
The Foxes, who entertain relegation-threatened Birmingham this afternoon, have what could prove to be a pivotal game in hand on their title rivals against Southampton.
