Lewis Hamilton, the Formula One driver revealed he once turned down the opportunity to work with Tom Cruise.
During the latest interview with GQ magazine, the racing superstar shared that he has been in good books with Tom Cruise since he was invited in 2014 to the sets of the film Edge of Tomorrow by the Mission Impossible actor.
Hamilton also shared that they remained in contact through messages so much so that Tom used to send encouraging messages to Hamilton during races. This is years before the Top Gun: Maverick, and evenmade Hamilton ask Tom to cast him in the Top Gun’s sequel.
At the time Hamilton said, “I said, ‘Dude, if you ever do Top Gun 2, I will even be a janitor,’” he continued, “’Just let me be in it.’”
The Mission: Impossible star was mindful of his request and put Hamilton in contact with Top Gun’s director Joseph Kosinski during its pre-production phase and he was offered a role as one of the film’s pilots as a result.
However due to Hamilton’s busy schedule, he passed on the opportunity.
Hamilton told the outlet, “Firstly, I hadn’t even had, like, an acting lesson, and I don’t want to be the one that lets this movie down.”
He went on to say, “And then secondly, I just really didn’t have the time to dedicate to it. I remember having to tell Joe and Tom — and it broke my heart.”
Later on, he regretted his decision after watching the action film and said, “And then I regretted it, naturally, when they show me the movie and it’s: It could’ve been me! Oh, God, I’m still….”
The racer’s desire to work in Hollywood did not end there because soon after that he was offered work with Kosinski and signed up to produce theupcoming Formula 1 movie starring Brad Pitt.
Hamilton told the outlet, “My point was: Guys, this movie needs to be so authentic.”
He explained the fan groups for racing include, “the old originals, who from the day they’re born hearing the Grand Prix music every weekend”, and another group is “the new generation” who “learned about it today through Netflix.”
He added, “This is how it would be. This is how it could happen.’ Just giving them advice about what racing is really about and what, as a racing fan, would appeal and what would not.”
