Chelsea might be owed £24 million this week if rival Tottenham plays its part

Chelsea might receive a £24 million dividend by the end of this week if cross-city rivals Tottenham chip in. After spending hundreds of millions of pounds on deals in recent years, the Blues are expected to sell players this summer in order to comply with Premier League financial requirements.

Chelsea could complete a deal before the window opens, with Lewis Hall getting closer to a permanent move to Newcastle. The 19-year-old joined the Magpies on a temporary basis last year but has battled to maintain his place in the squad, making only 11 league games this season.

The arrangement that brought Hall to Newcastle for the season contained an obligation to buy at the end of his loan period. However, that clause will only take effect if the Tyneside club finishes 15th or higher in the Premier League table.

If Newcastle wins their next match against Tottenham, they will almost certainly finish outside the division’s bottom five. Chelsea would be due the £24 million sum since the obligation to buy clause would be activated automatically.

The Blues are understood to have already budgeted for the transaction, implying they will be rooting for Newcastle to escape loss against Spurs this weekend. However, it remains to be seen whether the funds raised will go far towards alleviating any potential worries about profit and sustainability regulations.

Last month, Chelsea announced a £90.1 million loss for the 2022/23 season, raising concerns about their compliance with financial standards. The Premier League has been harsh on teams that have broken the regulations, with Everton and Nottingham Forest both losing points.

Chelsea has disputed that they will violate profit and sustainability criteria, stating in their accounts that they fully anticipate to comply. However, former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness recently warned that a penalty may be unavoidable unless Chelsea can perform some’very clever engineering’ in the transfer market.
