Named Championship manager of the season, Kieran McKenna said Ipswich will “give it everything” in their attempt to secure promotion.
With three games remaining, Town leads the standings by one point as they aim to make their Premier League comeback after not playing in the league since 2002.
Despite drawing with Middlesbrough in their most recent match, they both lost to their main rivals, Leeds and Leicester.
The final week will determine the outcome, according to head coach McKenna.
“We just set the record for most points for a newly promoted team in the Championship with 89 points. I don’t think any team in EFL history has ever had 90 points in two consecutive seasons, and we have a chance to do that.
The Tractor Boys‘ next two games are away to Coventry and Hull, two teams that are just outside the play-off spots, so securing a top-two finish will not be simple. Their final game is at home against Huddersfield
However, McKenna thinks his men will benefit from a rest before their trip to Humberside on April 27.
After the 1-1 tie with Boro, he stated, “We’d like to have a little more depth in one or two positions. Some of the boys have played five games in the last 15 days, played 90 minutes every game.”
“That’s a ridiculous amount of football, and every match has been close. Our team is the most running team in the league, and the boys give it their all on the pitch.
and I believe that after the time, we’ll be stronger.”
“We’ve got a little time to train, prepare, and recover, and then we can look forward to three games,” he continued. Although we are aware that it would be extremely difficult, we are excited about the opportunity and will give it our all.”
At the English Football League (EFL) awards on Sunday, McKenna’s management accolade was validated when Wes Burns’ goal from a 2-1 victory over Coventry in December was awarded Championship goal of the season.
Daniel Farke, the manager of Leeds United, and Liam Rosenior of Hull City were the other nominees for manager of the season.
Since McKenna joined Ipswich from Manchester United in December 2021, the team has won 73 games out of 129, losing just 20. Former captain Mick Mills called McKenna’s award “well deserved”.
“He’s been absolutely superb ever since he’s been here,” Mills said on BBC Radio Suffolk.
“It was immediately clear that his speciality was in the training field.
“His territory is the training ground. He is in charge of that department, and all of the players who have worked with him will attest to the fact that they have developed as a result of the items he offers them and the explanations he provides.
His strength of character is something else that has struck me. He’s a Pep Guardiola type who plays football dangerously, out of the back, and they don’t complain when things don’t go as planned.
“The man must remain powerful and resolute, and he does, when he wants his team to play that manner. And everyone is affected by it.”
