After an intense match, Leeds United emerged victorious, defeating Middlesbrough 4-3 under nerve-wracking conditions.
Coming away from Middlesbrough with three extra points was all that counted after three games without a win earlier in April. After winning 4-3 at the Riverside to end a thrilling match between Middlesbrough and Leeds, Leeds now have 90 points.
Leeds 4–3 Boro: Luke Ayling observes Whites’ victory from the stands.
With two new absences in Sam Greenwood and Luke Ayling, who are naturally unable to play for their parent club after departing in the summer and January, respectively, Middlesbrough entered this match with a variety of injury concerns.
Given the scarcity of full-back alternatives at the moment and Ayling’s five assists since signing on loan in the winter, Michael Carrick suffered a significant blow.
Ayling told Sky Sports that he wanted “football” to win the match, although he was unsure about who would win before the game:
Ayling feels that Middlesbrough was “battered.” Leeds: Given his present allegiances, podcast host Ayling would have naturally wanted “Boro” to win three points so they could cap off their season as best they could.
In an interview with supporters outside the Riverside after the game, Ayling stated that the home team was superior: “Leeds weren’t battered, it was even Middlesbrough, in both games this season, have brought the best and worst out of us in and out of possession.” Matt Rowney of The Boro Breakdown Podcast reports that Ayling shared this opinion.
With the intensity they displayed, it was impossible to tell they had nothing to lose, and the quality of the last third of Latte Lath and the others is undoubtedly something they could improve upon.
We had plenty of opportunities to score more goals in the second half thanks to Dan James, Bamford, and Summerville, so I don’t think Leeds were too hurt.
Undoubtedly, though, this remark will make Ayling more popular with their supporters.
