Tottenham Van de Ven’s disallowed goal decision vs Arsenal

Tottenham’s North London Derby versus Arsenal has resulted in a number of controversial VAR judgements.

Tottenham thought they had equalised against Arsenal in the North London Derby, but VAR overturned the goal. Despite Spurs‘ early dominance, the Gunners took the lead thanks to an own goal by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg following a Bukayo Saka corner.

Ange Postecoglou‘s side reacted strongly after falling behind, with Cristian Romero having two headers at goal, the latter rebounding past the post, but it was his centre-back partner who scored. Following a cleared corner, Pedro Porro’s long-range strike caused the ball to fall loose, and Van de Ven reacted quickly to shoot home.

However, after the ball was in the net, the officials conducted a lengthy VAR review, eventually finding that the Netherlands international was offside. The incident was apparent at first, but from several angles, Gabriel, who was slightly slumped over, appeared to be keeping him onside.

However, as the lines were drawn, a decision was made to reverse the goal, and Spurs’ fortunes quickly deteriorated. As Arsenal broke on the counter-attack, Saka was found in acres of space, driving inside Ben Davies before blasting past Guglielmo Vicario.

Despite falling farther down, Spurs kept pushing forward and enjoying some possession in Arsenal’s defensive third, only for another blow to come.
