Tottenham Hotspur are expected to make a surprise acquisition this summer as manager Ange Postecoglou seeks to bolster his midfield at the north London club.
Spurs lost all-time leading scorer Harry Kane last summer, but added a number of new players, including James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario, and Brennan Johnson.
Despite a mainly positive season, Tottenham have suffered injuries, and Postecoglou has warned that the rebuilding process would take longer.
A new midfielder is considered to be high on the Australian’s priority list, as he is reportedly looking for a player to fill the number six role at Spurs.
On the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, Spurs-supporting journalist and club specialist Alasdair Gold stated: “Number six is a more difficult one really. In terms of skills, I believe that a number six will be a true data signer, capable of doing a variety of tasks.
“They’ve been widely associated with Ederson, which is a weird one because it depends on who you ask whether he’s a natural number six or not.
“I’ll say Ederson for that role for now, but I feel like maybe that number six role will be more of a data-based one that people are surprised by and it comes from left field, we will see.”
Ederson, a Brazilian Under-20 international who has played for Atalanta since 2022, has recently been linked with Newcastle United.
Tottenham, meantime, are hoping to add another attacker this summer, with Genoa‘s Icelandic international Albert Gundmundsson among those linked with a transfer to N17.
