Spurs eyeing dream Son partner who’s ‘one of the finest players in the PL’

The extraordinary talent might flourish under Postecoglou’s system.

After a difficult few weeks in the Premier League, in which the club lost to fierce rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur returned to winning ways over the weekend with a 2-1 home triumph over Vincent Kompany’s Burnley team.

Ange Postecoglou’s team did not deliver a vintage performance, but they completed the task at hand. The game witnessed the return of summer acquisition James Maddison, who assisted Micky van de Ven’s victory.

However, it has not been the season many had hoped for from the former Leicester City player, and with the summer transfer window approaching, Daniel Levy and Co may be prepared to blow the cash to sign a player who can boost Son Heung-min’s numbers up front.

Tottenham Hotspur Transfer News

According to a report published late last week by Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are’monitoring’ Crystal Palace sensation Eberechi Eze’s status in South London.

The bad news for the Lilywhites is that the same report states Manchester City has already indicated interest in the skilled midfielder, implying that a bidding war for the Englishman could break out in the summer.

However, a recent Football Insider report revealed that the Eagles are willing to listen to offers in excess of £70 million for the former Queens Park Rangers star this summer, making a move for him slightly easier if City are even moderately hesitant to spend that much.

Ultimately, bringing Eze to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer will necessitate lengthy discussions or a sizable money. Nonetheless, considering his enormous talent, Maddison’s lacklustre performance, and the likelihood that he may supercharge Son, it appears to be a deal worth pursuing.

How could Eze boost Son?

Now, if the Lilywhites were to sign Eze ahead of next season, his preference to play in an attacking midfield role suggests he would push Maddison out of the starting lineup, but how do the two compare this season?

In recent performances, the Palace ace has been marginally more prolific. In his last 30 games, he has nine goals and five assists. In comparison, the Spurs star has four goals and eight assists in his last 28 appearances.

Furthermore, after returning to fitness in early March, Eze has scored four goals and supplied two assists in ten league games, while Maddison has only one goal and two assists in the same time span.

So, while the former Foxes player has seen a significant drop in form in 2024, the former QPR star has seen an increase in form, most likely due to the fact that he is finally playing under a progressive manager in Oliver Glasner, implying that he would thrive under a manager like Postecoglou.

Having said that, how well does the 25-year-old work with Son?

According to Understat, both midfielders are averaging roughly 0.29 anticipated assists per 90 minutes this season, although the South Korean international is still far outperforming his projected goals rate of 0.38 per 90. This means that bringing in the Palace man for the 27-year-old will not have a negative impact on Son’s service.

However, the Greenwich-born attacker’s predicted goal per 90 this season is 0.41, while his prospective opponents’ is only 0.24.

Eberechi Eze

This important distinction demonstrates how the Palace star, rated as “the best in the Premier League” by Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil, may boost Son’s performance. His greater goal threat may create more room for the 31-year-old to exploit, and his finishing skill would allow the former Bayer Leverkusen star to accumulate considerably more assists than he has this season.

Finally, while Maddison is a wonderful player, his drop-off this year has been considerable, and while Eze may generate the same projected assist total as him, the fact that he is a considerably more dangerous goal threat could boost Son’s overall output.
