Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo acknowledged to The Telegraph that he discussed joining Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur last season.

The France international was on Manchester United’s radar last summer, but the Red Devils made no formal offer to sign him. Spurs were considered as potential possibilities to sign the former Barcelona player in January, but the London club eventually decided to sign Radu Dragusin from Serie A club Genoa instead.

Todibo has now stated that he does not want to discuss his future with Nice and its fans, but that there has been some discussion. When asked about United and Spurs, he replied:

“Honestly, I don’t want to talk about [my future] because I respect the supporters here and the club as well. However, we did have a brief chat.

Quality center-back

Todibo has developed into a quality ball-playing central defender since joining Nice from Barcelona on loan. During the recent Ligue 1 season, the Frenchman completed 90% of his passes and won 59% of his ground and aerial duels. He also averaged 7.1 ball recoveries, 3.1 clearances, and 1.9 tackles per game for the South Coast team.

With such statistics, it won’t be long until he finds a new challenge outside of Nice. United pursued him last summer but did not make a formal proposition.

They may be able to do so this time around, as compatriot Raphael Varane is due to leave on a free transfer. The Spurs could potentially make a bid for him. Both clubs will aim for Champions League qualification next season.

Nice are willing to take £34 million to secure his departure this summer. Both United and Tottenham should be able to pay the package for his services, but the centre-back may want the assurance of a starting spot in the Premier League if he decides to join one of the English clubs in the coming weeks.
