Tottenham are now unlikely to sign forward Timo Werner on a permanent basis this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
Spurs signed the 28-year-old on loan from RB Leipzig in the January transfer window, and it is widely speculated that they have the option to make the deal permanent for roughly £15 million.
Werner had a thigh injury that kept him out of the final five games of the 2023-24 season.
Ange Postecoglou has indicated that Tottenham face a deadline to activate the option this summer.
He stated: “I’m comfortable with that situation and I’ll let the other guys steer it to see what kind of outcome there is.”
Tottenham are reported to have preparations in place to sign a younger offensive alternative and have compiled a list of several potential targets.
Tottenham poised to decline permanent contract for Werner, as target list is drawn up.
Werner made 14 appearances in all competitions during the second half of the 2023-24 season, starting 11 of them.
He scored two goals and provided three assists for Postecoglou’s team.
The German international, who was not called up for the European Championships, is under contract with Leipzig until June 2026.
Tottenham finished fifth in the 2023-24 season and will play Europa League football next year.
Spurs’ other forwards are Heung-min Son, Richarlison, Brennan Johnson and Manor Solomon.
