Here, we look at which pot Tottenham will be in for the 2024/25 Europa League campaign, as well as when the competition will be drawn.
Tottenham will be among the favourites to win the 2024/25 Europa League. Ange Postecoglou’s team will compete in a very different Europa League starting in September after qualifying for UEFA’s second club competition by finishing fifth in the Premier League.
Teams that qualified for the main round of the new-look Europa League will compete in a 36-team league starting next season, as opposed to previously being divided into four groups during the competition’s group phase.
The top eight teams advance directly to the round of 16, while the teams ranked ninth through 24th participate in the knockout round play-offs for a spot in the final 16.
All eyes will be on the new format for the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League. Spurs are already one of 13 teams guaranteed into the Europa League league phase, joining another Premier League club Manchester United after defeating rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup.
Other teams who have already qualified for the league phase are Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Eintracht Frankfurt, Hoffenheim, Roma, Lazio, Nice, Lyon, AZ, and Porto.
Olympiacos will compete in the Europa League next season after winning the Europa Conference League final on Wednesday.
Eintracht Frankfurt may still compete in the Champions League beginning in September. Borussia Dortmund’s triumph in Saturday’s Champions League final against Real Madrid would promote their fellow German side to Europe’s top championship in 2024/25.
Spurs will find out who their Europa League opponents are when the league phase draw takes place on Friday, August 30. To determine the fixtures, the 36 teams will be divided into four pots of nine based on coefficient rankings.
Each team will then be paired against two other teams from each pot, with one game at home and the other away. This in turn defines each team’s eight league games as they compete for a spot in the round of 16.
So, which pot will Tottenham be in for the Europa League league phase draw? Spurs appear to be on track to be in pot 1 for the August draw, as the pots are determined by coefficient rankings.
The Lilywhites now have a coefficient ranking of 54.000, trailing only five teams: Roma (101.000), Manchester United (92.000), Porto (77.000), and Eintracht Frankfurt (60.000).
Lazio is also expected to be in pot 1 because their coefficient is 54.000, just like Tottenham.
Pots for Real Sociedad, AZ, Lyon, Nice, Athletic Bilbao, Hoffenheim, and Olympiacos are still to be determined. Spurs will face two clubs from pot one, thus Postecoglou’s side may face some difficult matches given the current top-tier sides.
Before the draw, Tottenham’s head coach will be aiming to bolster his squad in the transfer market this summer to assure their success in the Premier League and three cup tournaments.
Timo Werner became Spurs’ first signing for the 2024/25 season on Tuesday, returning on a season-long loan from RB Leipzig.
