According to reports in Spain, Atlético Madrid should consider Tottenham Hotspur’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg as their best midfield option this summer.
This news comes nearly a month after AS stated that the 28-year-old is not a key goal for the La Liga club. Saúl Ñíguez’s likely move to Sevilla could reduce Atlético’s pay bill, allowing them to recruit a defensive midfielder. According to Wednesday’s issue of Mundo Deportivo, the Madrid club’s target list includes the Tottenham player, Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino, Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, and Manuel Ugarte of Paris Saint-Germain.
According to the news, Merino can play defensive midfield even though it is not his favoured position. He remains a goal for Los Rojiblancos because his contract runs until 2025.
If Atlético signs Merino, they may still add another midfielder, which is where Højbjerg comes in. He performed well for Denmark at the Euros and is a defensive midfielder.
Diego Simeone reportedly wishes to have a player like Højbjerg at Atlético. He also has a year left on his contract, and Mundo reports that Tottenham are eager to move him during this transfer window.
There’s a deal to be done here for Atlético, given that previous reports suggested the Dane would prefer to leave Spurs.
