AC Milan is looking for a new right back to replace Davide Calabria this summer, and it looks that their search has led them to Tottenham’s Emerson Royal.
Emerson, who was once a highly regarded player in LaLiga for Real Betis, has slipped behind Pedro Porro for Tottenham. Porro was an acclaimed prospect at Sporting CP before moving to North London and, inevitably, developing into one of the Premier League’s greatest players.
That leaves Emerson as an outlier, but to the surprise of Spurs fans, Milan is willing to take a chance on the inconsistent right back.
So far, both parties are haggling in negotiations, with Tottenham demanding an ambitious 20 million euros and Milan refusing to accept their terms.
According to London’s Alasdair Gold, Tottenham turned down a “formal offer” from AC Milan for Emerson in an attempt to receive 20 million euros; in the meantime, the 25-year-old is reportedly being considered by Borussia Dortmund.
Tottenham benefits from Dortmund’s interest because, having recently advanced to the Champions League Final, they are a more successful European team than either Spurs or the Rossoneri.
Dortmund also needs more support at right back. Although they might not be prepared to pay 20 million euros for Emerson, many have been taken aback by their recent transfer acquisitions.
Emerson is an attacking-minded right defender who fits Dortmund’s gambling, athletic style and arguably more so than any other league.
Whatever the reasons for Dortmund’s interest, Tottenham may use it as leverage to obtain the 20 million euros they seek from Milan for a player they are clearly going to sell and would otherwise have little bargaining power over.
It will be interesting to see what kind of transfer offer Dortmund has in mind for Emerson and how “keen” they are, as Gold puts it, to get the ex-Barcelona prospect.
