The 25-year-old player is told by Tottenham that he is not in their plans.

Goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman may be on the verge of leaving Tottenham Hotspur, as Spurs source John Wenham has revealed.

Whiteman’s future at Tottenham seems doubtful, especially because Brandon Austin has cemented his role as Guglielmo Vicario’s first-choice keeper’s backup.

There has been a change in Tottenham’s goalkeeping hierarchy, as evidenced by recent observations made on the preseason trip. Austin played in all five of the Spurs’ preseason games, making a significant appearance.

Whiteman, on the other hand, only made a fleeting cameo appearance. It’s obvious that Austin is now in the lead over Whiteman due to the glaring disparity in opportunities.

Since joining Tottenham’s academy in 2015, Whiteman has primarily played loan games or served as a backup for the team. In 2020, he made his most noteworthy first-team debut against Ludogorets Razgrad in the UEFA Europa League.

Although Whiteman’s contract with Tottenham was extended in February 2023, there hasn’t been much of an opportunity for him to play a regular role for the senior side. Although he gained invaluable experience during his two loan stints in Sweden with Degerfors, consistent first-team football at Tottenham has proven to be unattainable.

Wenham said that since Whiteman’s contract is expiring in a year, now could be the best moment for him and the team to think about making a transfer.

Whiteman may gain from being free to look for possibilities elsewhere since it would provide him consistent playing time, something he hasn’t had much of at Tottenham. It would free up resources for Spurs, allowing them to concentrate on other areas that needed improvement.

Whiteman’s path to consistent first-team participation seems more and more obstructed as Guglielmo Vicario solidifies his position as the team’s top goalkeeper, with Fraser Forster and Brandon Austin serving as dependable backups.

Spurs may have made the right move in letting him go, giving Whiteman the opportunity to pursue a bigger role and balancing the team.
