Brighton and Hove Albion, a Premier League team, has made a £40 million transfer bid for Georginio Rutter, a star for Leeds United.
It has been revealed that the Seagulls have triggered Rutter’s contract’s release clause; as a result, the player must now choose whether or not to move forward with the planned trade.
According to The Athletic’s original report, the Whites have already turned down offers for the Frenchman totaling £29 million and £35 million. But the Seagulls came back with a third offer, which made Rutter’s release clause go into effect.
Rutter has participated in both of United’s 2024–25 season’s first two games. He was sent in as a second-half replacement yesterday night as Daniel Farke’s team lost 3-0 to Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup opening round, sending them out of the competition.
If Rutter does go Elland Road, it will be a serious setback to the Whites’ aspirations of being promoted. The erratic attacker had a fantastic season last year, helping United place third in the Championship with six goals and 16 assists.
Rutter is a well-liked member of the United squad. He joined the Whites in January 2023 from the German team Hoffenheim for a club-record cost that may reach £35 million. Farke has been his coach, and he has thrived as number 10.
Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville have already left United for greener pastures this summer; the latter left when West Ham United fulfilled his own £25 million release clause earlier this month.
It is unclear if Rutter will play in the match at The Hawthorns when Farke’s team returns to action on Saturday when they visit West Bromwich Albion.
