A Few in Our Press Called Callum McGregor’s Celtic Decision “Pathetic”.

According to Graham Spiers, several journalists have called Callum McGregor’s choice to forego a transfer to England “pathetic” and have been quite critical of it behind closed doors.

After Celtic’s victory in the Glasgow Derby, Spiers discussed on his podcast how some of his colleagues had called McGregor’s decision to stay at Celtic “pathetic” and that it shown a “lack of ambition.”

This is related to a substantial £20 million offer made by Leicester City during Brendan Rodgers’ tenure with the English team. McGregor decided not to join the Irishman south and instead inked a large, long-term deal with Celtic.

Since then, McGregor has flourished as Celtic’s captain, helping the team win championships and a triple. He has also extended his contract with the team.

Spiers supported McGregor’s choice, saying that even though the midfielder had the opportunity to play for elite teams in England, he stayed and turned into a club icon that should be respected rather than mocked.

“They [other journalists he spoke to] countered, ‘this is a pathetic lack of ambition’,” he remarked on his Press Box show. As you might imagine, they were quite critical of them and did not want them to travel anyplace else in Britain.

They thought it was pitiful and narrow-minded. McGregor could probably play for any of the best teams in England if he so desired.

Callum McGregor would have been told he was overly ambitious if he had told people when he was eight years old that he wanted to lead Celtic and win 22 trophies. He’s fulfilling the desire of all Celtic supporters.

This season, Callum McGregor is on fire.

With three goals in his previous three games, the Celtic captain has shown that he has recovered his shooting form this season. He’s already surpassed his previous season’s total after just four league games.

Furthermore, it goes beyond tap-ins. If he continues to score goals, Callum McGregor’s goal of the season will be renamed to “What was Callum McGregor’s Goal of the Season.”

We shouldn’t be shocked if certain Scottish journalists discuss our captain in this manner when they’re not in front of the cameras or the press. Cal has always been a winner, so it tells a lot about the media up here that you would call someone “pathetic” for not moving on despite your intense dislike of the game you cover.
