Daniel Levy strikes a last-minute “win-win” compromise at Tottenham.

Football finance specialist Dan Plumley claims that Daniel Levy has landed Tottenham a “win-win” deal after he reached a last-minute agreement with Real Betis for Johnny Cardoso.

With a cost set at £25.3 million, Spurs and the Spanish club have worked out a priority option that would guarantee Spurs the first chance to acquire the 22-year-old in the future [Tom Bogert, 30 August].

Ange Postecoglou’s team will get a cut of whatever money Betis are able to sign the American for if they choose not to sign him. Plumley thinks more deals of this like may be in store for the future.

With exclusive knowledge to Tottenham News, Plumley said, “It’s a really unique agreement.”

“It is definitely unusual because I cannot immediately recall any such contract that was set up in that way.”

“On the other hand, it’s a really astute business move as well. To get [Giovani] Lo Celso off the books and over to Real Betis, I believe that he was also included in the trade. He was someone who maybe ought to go.”

“So, in order to do that, you should give an emerging player who you believe may have future potential first priority. If you decide not to pursue that player, you will still receive a portion of the sell-on. I think it is a pretty clever business move from Spurs.”

“As you suggest, perhaps we will see a little more of it in the future, but for now, it is definitely unique and practically benefits the club. They are the first choice if they choose to pursue that player. They also stand to gain some little business if they decide it’s not the best course of action and that person moves on. If it works out well for them, I think it’s a really smart business move.”

From the Spurs’ point of view, it is difficult to see how this arrangement with Betis could go wrong. They either pocket the money for a guy they never really owned, or they sign a promising new player at a steep discount.

Spurs fans often criticize Levy, and rightfully so, but the Lilywhites should also receive a lot of credit for this kind of transaction as they are entering a market that no one else has ever entered.
