How FC Twente’s Loan System Could Reignite Gustaf Lagerbielke’s Career

The Sweden international center-half finally succeeded in arranging a loan move in the summer when he chose FC Twente Enschede over several other options that were presented to him.

The Swedish defender, a £3 million summer 2023 project signing from Swedish side Elfsborg, has never been able to convince Brendan Rodgers of his status as a first team player at Celtic.

If a permanent transfer can be arranged, Lagerbielke‘s lucrative contract with Celtic expires in June 2028, so a longer-term solution would be perfect for Celtic. Arnold Bruggink, the sporting director of the Erdivisie team, has previously stated that they will not have the funds to recruit the Swedish player from Celtic in the summer. It’s like someone kicked the can down the road.

For Lagerbielke and Celtic in particular, it is crucial that the 24-year-old defender sees a lot of action in the Europa League and Dutch league this season, grabbing the attention of a possible suitor for the summer transfer window.

Gustaf has been discussing his circumstances at Celtic and his expectations for his Dutch football season with FC Twente with Forbolldirekt.

“I feel like playing is just around the corner, and I’m excited about that.” I feel like I’ve fit in well and I’m having fun here,” Lagerbielke remarked.

He said, “The club and I agreed that a loan would be very good for both parties because I didn’t get much playing time at Celtic.” After that, I thought over my alternatives and found that a few clubs across numerous nations were interested. I met with various clubs and weighed the benefits and drawbacks of each.

“It seemed like a great fit after the meeting with Twente. Their training methodology is distinctly development-oriented. They have a tiny squad, and each member is given a great deal of responsibility.

That felt like the ideal combination, as did competing in the excellent Dutch league and the Europa League. It all comes down to being able to play and contribute significantly to the team. Development follows that,” he said.

We’ll all be closely monitoring Lagerbielke‘s progress, and maybe he’ll perform well enough at FC Twente to have them reconsider their position on a permanent transfer come summer, or else he might attract the attention of another team searching for a top player at a low cost.
