Preview: Celtic vs. Rangers: lineups, team news, and predictions

In the much-anticipated Old Firm rivalry in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday afternoon, Celtic and Rangers will have the chance to win the first trophy of the 2024–25 campaign.

The Gers have won all nine of their last games in all competitions, while the Bhoys have won all 30 of their previous games in all domestic tournaments.

Preview of the match

Since a 2-0 league setback to Hearts at the start of March, Celtic has been undefeated in the Scottish Premiership, League Cup, and Cup, making them an unstoppable force in domestic tournaments thus far this season.

The Bhoys have really only lost once in the last 36 games in all competitions since that loss, and that was on matchday two of this year’s Champions League league phase when they lost 7-1 to Borussia Dortmund.

After that humiliating loss, Brendan Rodgers was heavily criticized, but his team has recovered admirably, winning 10 games and drawing four. They are now nine points ahead of Aberdeen in second place in the Scottish Premiership and are on track to make it to the Champions League knockout stages for the first time since 2012–13.

The Bhoys will enter this match with a great deal of confidence because to their impressive play and excellent start to the season, especially after they have won 1-0 in the Scottish Cup final last season and are undefeated in the last six Old Firm derbies.

With six victories and three draws in their previous nine games, the Gers appear to have found their form just in time, but they have also displayed glimpses of fragility and susceptibility throughout the first nine games of 2024–25.

In comparison to their start to the season, when Rangers lost five of their first 17 games in all competitions and had their worst start to a campaign since returning to the top division in 2016–17 after 13 games, that represents a major turnaround.

Since the Gers are now 11 points behind Celtic after 15 games, Philippe Clement‘s role at the club has been under a lot of scrutiny. However, their recent performance has helped to boost confidence at Ibrox.

Even though they didn’t win all three points in their most recent game, a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League, their confidence will surely soar going into this match as they look to defend their Scottish League Cup trophy after defeating Aberdeen 1-0 in the previous year’s final.
