Leeds United’s Championship rivals remove promotion-winning boss following another defeat

One of Leeds United’s Championship opponents has fired their promotion-winning manager.

Oxford United, Leeds United‘s Championship rivals, have fired promotion-winning manager Des Buckingham ahead of next weekend’s game at Elland Road.

Oxford are back in the second division for the first time in 25 years, having been promoted as League One play-off champions last season, and are currently fifth-bottom, one point clear of the dropzone.

The United States, on the other hand, has only one point from their previous six games, and play-off-winning manager Buckingham has been fired following Saturday’s 3-1 loss at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Buckingham has been fired ahead of next Saturday’s 3pm kick-off against second-placed Leeds, after the Yellows had won only one of their last 15 games, six of which have ended in draws.

The club issued the following statement: “Oxford United can confirm that Des Buckingham has resigned as Men’s First Team Head Coach.

Des was appointed in November 2023 and guided the club to promotion to the EFL Sky Bet Championship at the end of the 2023/24 season.”

“The Club would like to express its gratitude to Des for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well in the future.

“The appointment of a new head coach will be confirmed in due course.”
