Fuming fans may get the decision they want, but it comes at a price.
The Rangers board reportedly had crisis discussions regarding Philippe Clement in response to recent fan pressure.
However, they will have to fire him outright to put an end to accusations that the boss is determined to fight for his position and would not back down. Fans have recently expressed their dissatisfaction with Clement’s management after slipping 15 points behind rivals Celtic and failing to capitalise on a rare victory against the Hoops at the turn of the year. ‘Clement, get to f***’ was heard from the Rangers’ end during their draw with Dundee at Dens, and both the Union Bears and the Rangers Supporters Association issued statements today denouncing the manager and the board.
According to the Scottish Sun, while the board had no intention of considering Clement’s status, the outrage from supporters has’stung’ decision-makers, who have since conducted discussions over his future. However, it is likely that the Belgian would not resign from his job, forcing them to make the painful and costly decision to fire him.
Clement’s contract was extended in the summer and now runs until 2028, and he has made it obvious that he intends to stay. He will be in the dugout against St Johnstone on Sunday, but there are mounting concerns that it could be his final game, especially if things don’t go as planned.
