When Ao Tanaka left, Norwich manager Johannes Hoff Thorup did something “bizarre” to the Leeds United supporters.

Leeds United returned to the top of the Championship table on Wednesday night after defeating Daniel Farke’s team 2-0 at Elland Road, but the match was not without controversy.

After a wonderful goal that featured deft passes from Jayden Bogle and Brenden Aaronson, Manor Solomon gave Leeds the lead 31 seconds later. Dan James then provided an assist.
Norwich never really tested Illan Meslier, who was under fire, although they did get near the Leeds penalty area. However, Leeds scored a second goal when James scored after Solomon did the same.

With a resounding victory, Daniel Farke keeps up his incredible recent play against his former team.

Over the past 18 months, Leeds and Farke have won five of their six games against the Canaries and drew one.
Ao Tanaka was given a yellow card for diving into a tackle during Johannes Hoff Thorup’s “bizarre” encounter with Leeds United supporters. After receiving a second yellow card, the Japan player could have been sent off, but fortunately for Leeds, he stayed on and was replaced soon after.

On the touchline, Norwich manager Thorup was not pleased. Thorup, who is frequently spotted conversing with Farke alongside the fourth official, responded to Tanaka’s substitution by attempting to interact with the supporters.

Beren Cross of The Athletic covered Johannes Hoff Thorup’s X: Bizarre. As Tanaka is removed a few moments after he believes he should have been fired, he puts his arm around his head to encourage an increasing number of cheers from Elland Road.
Even though Ao Tanaka was fortunate enough to escape without being sent off, Farke understood that a red was approaching, as evidenced by his choice to remove Tanaka just after the hour mark. Seldom is Tanaka replaced before the 80th minute.

Tanaka may be able to get a little more rest now that Ilia Gruev is back, but Farke‘s decision to remove Tanaka from the field was undoubtedly made to spare the £3.4 million player from being sent off.

Tanaka will therefore be eligible for Leeds‘ pivotal matchup against rivals Burnley at Turf Moor on Monday. All four of Leeds’ automatic promotion rivals won, but Leeds took the lead once more.
