Rangers will not have Mohamed Diomande against Manchester United.
The 23-year-old midfielder will miss the Europa League match at Old Trafford due to a suspension.
Diomande received many yellow cards in games during the competition’s redesigned league phase, earning him a ban for the match.
Diomande will not be in the matchday squad against Manchester United due to bookings against Malmo, OGC Nice, and Tottenham.
According to competition regulations, players who receive three yellow cards during the league phase would be suspended for one match. Any further odd-numbered cautions result in additional suspensions.
The UEFA disciplinary rules state: “In case of repeated cautions: as from the first match in the league phase, players and team officials are suspended for the next competition match after three cautions, that did not result in a red card, as well as after any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.).”
It continues: “Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward either to the next stage of the competition or to the UEFA Conference League in the current season.”
Diomande would thus be subject to another one-match suspension if he had two more bookings. During the competition, yellow cards are carried over, but they are removed at the end of the quarterfinals.
“Exceptionally, all yellow cards and pending yellow-cards,” the rules state.
“All yellow cards and pending yellow-card suspensions expire upon the conclusion of the play-offs,” the rules state. They don’t carry over into the league stage.
“All yellow cards also expire at the end of the quarterfinals. Not one of them advances to the semi-finals.
