West Brom and Middlesbrough clashes to sign 23-goal Tottenham Hotspur’s wonder youngster

Tottenham Hotspur could allow a promising forward to join West Bromwich Albion or Middlesbrough in January.

West Brom and Middlesbrough are among several Championship clubs interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur attacker Will Lankshear on loan for the remainder of the season. Albion have been in the hunt for a new striker since Josh Maja suffered a hamstring injury requiring surgery. Daryl Dike is nearly back from a serious Achilles issue but the American will need to be eased in before he plays regularly, so a loan signing is being sought.

Ipswich Town forward Ali Al-Hamadi was thought to be close to joining West Brom, however a problem was discovered during his physical. Instead, the Iraq international joined Stoke City and will remain at the Bet365 Stadium until the end of the season.

Football London reports West Brom are hoping to sign Lankshear to address their striker shortage, but they face competition from Middlesbrough, Luton Town, and Cardiff City. Clubs abroad are thought to be interested, but Spurs would want to see how their wonderkid performs in the Championship.

Lankshear, who is still only 19 years old, has made his senior debut for Tottenham this season with six appearances in the Premier League and UEFA Europa League. Unfortunately, the teenager was sent off for two yellow card offences in the latter game, which was the 3-2 loss at Galatasaray. An incredibly clinical player at the youth level, Lankshear scored 23 goals in 23 Premier League 2 appearances last season before making the move to the first team. In the season before that, Lankshear showed off his abilities with four goals and two assists in five U18 Premier League games.

Lankshear, who was originally signed by Sheffield United but joined Tottenham as a 17-year-old for £1 million, is an out-and-out centre-forward who could assist West Brom solve their problem. The striker, who is 6ft 2in tall, is not the quickest, but he has tremendous technical skill. Lankshear would not be assured to start every game for the Baggies, especially right away, but the Spurs number 42 would give stiff competition for Karlan Grant, Jed Wallace, and Grady Diangana, all of whom have lately served as supplementary attackers.

Albion certainly didn’t lack firepower in their recent 5-1 victory over Portsmouth at The Hawthorns, but their goal scoring has been hit-and-miss this season. A division-high 14 draws in 29 games has denied the Baggies the opportunity to fight with the top four – Leeds United, Sheffield United, Burnley, and Sunderland – all of whom have now marched away into the distance.
