Federico Valverde, a star for Real Madrid, has “no chance” of joining Liverpool next summer, claims Sky Sports analyst Kevin Campbell
The Reds had been searching for a new midfielder all summer to help with their persistent injury problem, but even after signing Arthur Melo on a season-long loan from Juventus, FSG was still interested in other players.
According to Spanish news agency AS, the Premier League heavyweights launched an £86.5 million proposal for the 24-year-old Valverde in the closing days of the transfer window, but the La Liga team refused to allow him depart before the deadline.
Campbell responded to a question from Football Insider about whether Liverpool would be able to land Valverde in 2023 should they up their offer:
“Not likely.
Real Madrid has dedicated a lot of time to developing Valverde as a player. He has been strengthened and trained to become a reliable starter.
“The guy also scored an incredible goal over the weekend. I believe he will develop into a player of the highest caliber. He can pass the ball with both feet, has a strong engine, and a devastating shot.
Real Madrid is not a club that sells products. They have raised this child, and he is now beginning to show his potential. He is not going to Liverpool, in my opinion.
Real Madrid is a club that does not trade away its greatest players.
It’s hardly surprising that Liverpool’s offer was turned down because Valverde has solidified his place in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting XI at the Bernabeu.
The Uruguayan has had an outstanding start to the season, contributing to five goals in eight games across all leagues but only making two Champions League appearances (Transfermarkt).
Valverde still has five years left on his Real Madrid contract, so he won’t be inexpensive. However, with Arthur already in the building, the Reds should hold off until the summer of 2019 to further consider their alternatives.
