Nat Phillips, a former Leeds United and Liverpool centre-back, is now a loan target for Middlesbrough after the Whites were told the asking price was £10 million.
The Whites appear to be reasonably well-stocked at the back this week as they prepare for the end of the transfer window.
Leeds will undoubtedly be busy, but one position where they do not require a new signing is centre-back, following the acquisition of Joe Rodon.
What’s going on with Nat Phillips these days?
Phil Hay reported early in the summer that Liverpool fringe player Nat Phillips was a priority target for Leeds in the centre-back department.
Outside of assisting Jurgen Klopp through a massive injury crisis in 20/21, the 26-year-old has struggled to make a regular impression in the Reds first squad.
Leeds was quoted a £10 million asking price for the centre-back at the height of their interest, but The Athletic have reported that the defender might be free to move on loan or permanently.
Who is interested in signing him?
Leeds is unlikely to pursue Phillips after signing Rodon, although he could still end up playing at Elland Road this season.
That’s because Middlesbrough, as well as a number of other clubs, as being interested in signing him.
Phillips is thought to be keen to leave Anfield in order to play regular first-team games, which is unlikely to happen anytime soon at Liverpool.
We have a far better alternative for how we want to play in Joe Rodon than we did in signing Phillips this summer.
Leeds would have been forced to spend £10 million to sign Phillips, but Rodon has joined us without a long-term contract and already appears to be a good match.
It remains to be seen how much we pay for Rodon in the summer of 2024 if we want to make him a permanent signing, but he’s already proving that he’d be worth considering.
