In January, Liverpool might try to recruit Austrian midfielder Konrad Laimer from RB Leipzig.
Dean Jones, a transfer insider, made this claim while discussing the most recent developments from Anfield with GIVEMESPORT prior to the break in international play.
Now that Laimer is entering the final year of his contract, Jürgen Klopp’s team may decide to try and arrange a pre-contract deal with a foreign club for the midfielder.
The Reds were reportedly interested in a deal for the 25-year-old during the previous summer’s transfer window, but nothing came of it, according to reports in Germany (via the Liverpool Echo).
Instead, Liverpool decided to recruit Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo on a season-long loan with an option to purchase the Brazilian for £32.4 million at the end of the campaign.
Jones, though, is of the opinion that the club’s acquisition of Melo won’t have any impact on its probable pursuit of Laimer in the coming months.
Jones said to GIVEMESPORT, “I think these are distinct types of targets.
“Arthur was a last-minute loan to fill a void, whereas Laimer would be a permanent acquisition who enters the club’s long-term planning.
He could still be a candidate for them to consider.
Given that several midfielders are expected to leave the club as free agents next summer, we think Liverpool fans will be pleased that the team appears keen on rebuilding their midfield.
Laimer, who impressed a BT commentator with his “pace,” has shown himself to be a proficient ball-handler. According to FBref, he is in the top 9% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues and European competition for dribbles completed per 90 minutes (1.38).
According to the same statistics provider, the 24-time Austrian international is also somewhat of a goal danger, ranking in the top 8% of midfielders for non-penalty XG per 90 minutes (0.16) and in the top 9% for assists per 90 minutes (0.23).
Therefore, we think Laimer would be a great addition to Liverpool, and if they could sign him to a pre-contract, we think that would be a very wise move.
